Mercusys AC12G is a simple and affordable ac1200 Gigabit Wi-Fi router. It carries 4 Ethernet ports on Board, supports the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, and should theoretically aim for speeds of 300 and 867 Mbit / s, respectively.
What’s in the box?
Spartan configuration: router, power supply and cable for Ethernet connection. Well, there are instructions and a warranty card. The packaging itself is also without any special claims, we are not here an image device, but a workhorse was brought.
What does it look like?
There are four antennas, two of them protrude from the sides of the device and two more “grow” from the back panel. Each antenna can rotate 90 degrees relative to the body plane and rotate along its axis. The front panel contains led indicators SYS, Wi-Fi, WAN, LAN.
There are four ports at the back for connecting network cables, one of them is the “incoming” WAN. There is only the power connector and the reset button next to it. The Ethernet connectors are turned up, not down. This is not a very convenient solution, disabling patch cords is a little hindered by the protrusion of the case cover.
How do I enable and configure it?
Plug the device into an outlet and connect the Internet source to the WAN port. After that, we connect to the device using the SSID indicated on the sticker at the bottom of the case. Or by cable, if the configuration will be carried out from a computer over a wired connection.
The configuration wizard, traditionally for Mercusys, is available on the site, and we go here first. To get started, you just need to set a password, select the network type, and name your access point. The procedure does not differ from setting up other Mercusys routers.
What can it do?
Mercusys AC12G-the device is quite utilitarian, but the settings under the hood are not so small. In basic settings mode, you can view lists of connected and blocked devices, connection parameters, as well as passwords and “switches” to wireless networks of both ranges.
Much more opens in the “Advanced settings” section. Here we are asked to reconfigure the WAN interface, DHCP, and DNS. You can link clients ‘ IP addresses to specific MAC addresses, change or clone the MAC address of the router itself. There is a section with IPTV settings where you can assign separate LAN ports for IPTV itself, as well as VoIP and Internet (for manual configuration, select Custom mode).
What about speed?
The AC1200 standard itself assumes the maximum possible bandwidth of the router up to 1200 Mbit / s in total in all wireless bands. Of course, this is a ceiling that can only be reached in laboratory conditions.
Mercusys AC12G proved to be a simple and reliable tool for distributing home Internet. At a retail price of about 850 UAH, it is close to the AC750 standard routers, which, according to tests, actually bypasses in wireless performance. It also offers Gigabit wired connections, still largely the preserve of more expensive devices. The reverse side of these buns — minimalism in the controls, the lack of USB ports and still not a record performance.
